Warm welcome in Ilheus

13,000 km and 17 hours later I land in Ilheus with Fadi.

As we exit the airport I spot a cocoa plant on an abandoned patch of grass by the parking lot – as if reminding us of the reason why we are here. This is our gateway to the region of Bahia from where we will be making our way to the Mars Centre for Cocoa Science in Itabuna.

Arriving at the hotel we are warmly greeted by Paula & Manuela of the Mars Centre for Cocoa Science. Despite the foreign surroundings of lush greenery dotted with coconut palm trees, Manuela is wearing a tee-shirt with the instantly recognizable logo of the 5 Principles – and suddenly I feel right at home.

Following some attempts at tightrope walking (we are told a common pastime in Brazil) we settle down for a delicious typical lunch of Feijoada. Feeling adequately full (and perhaps a little more!) we head for our rooms for some rest.

Look forward to meeting all the Ambassadors tomorrow!
